Periodical Pedagogies

In this session members of the Liberating Histories project team explored the ways in which magazines can be used as resources for teaching English Literature in the classroom. With a specific focus on Margaret Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale, we analysed the novel in relation to women’s movement magazines published in the 1980s, magazines such as Ms., Spare Rib and Red Rag.

This session showcased the range of freely available digitised periodicals available to use in the classroom, provided ideas for how to use these resources to enhance the study of literature and offered a concrete example of ‘periodical pedagogies’ in practice.
