Rolling our own!
Feminist Magazines and Women’s Liberation

In this workshop, we explored May Day Rooms‘ extensive holdings of feminist magazines from the 1970s-80s and discussed the symbiotic relationship between activist media and political movement.

From Spare Rib to Red Rag to Shocking Pink, activist periodicals of the 1970s-80s powered, connected and sustained the UK Women’s Liberation Movement. As the socialist-feminist magazine Scarlet Women put it in 1977: ‘political power grows out of the barrel of a duplicator!’

There was also be an introduction to digital resources including our Feminist Periodicals Guide, and the Spare Rib map.
